Team Bios
Kentaro Iwasaki, Founder and President
Kentaro, the son of immigrants from Japan, experienced first-hand the dissonant extremes in our education system, attending failing public schools through 8th grade and then an incredibly resourced private high school on scholarship. These disparate educational experiences highlighted the stark contrast in our schooling system and compelled Kentaro to provide the highest quality education to students furthest from the center, driven by a deep call to equity and social justice. A math teacher at heart with 16 years of classroom experience, Kentaro relentlessly sought out instructional approaches that worked with his students out of a deep sense of desperation. While department head at the fifth lowest performing high school in California, Kentaro increased AP math enrollment by 400% while also increasing passing rates on AP math exams. In 2011, Kentaro was honored to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching at the White House. Kentaro led statewide math initiatives and trained over 2000 math teachers and leaders while director at non-profit ConnectED. He wrote math curriculum used by over 350,000 students for Agile Mind through the Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Kentaro has served as co-chair of Harvard’s Data Wise Network, as a founding member of the Racial Equity Council at the NewSchools Venture Fund, and as adjunct faculty at San Francisco State University. Kentaro is National Board Certified and holds a BA from Stanford, a doctorate in education leadership from Harvard, and a Superintendent’s License from Massachusetts. Most importantly, Kentaro is a husband to an amazing special educator and father to two remarkable teenagers.
Sabrina Iwasaki, Co-founder and Vice President
Sabrina’s passion for students with learning differences grew from her love of children and her deep set belief that all students are capable learners with assets. Sabrina’s interest and expertise goes beyond the students themselves into the tools, systems and structures that support them. Sabrina has over 20 years of experience in the IEP process and has engaged with countless families and educators in making the IEP a collaborative and productive tool that creates rich and engaging learning environments. A seasoned special education classroom teacher, trainer, and district specialist in San Francisco Unified, Sabrina provided teachers and leaders with training, tools and coaching to best serve students with IEPs. Her most recent role in San Francisco Unified as an elementary math content specialist connected her passions for math and special education. Beyond her work in public education systems, Sabrina also provided direct services to families and students in their homes. As a mother and wife, Sabrina brings her personal lived experience in advocating for the highest quality services possible for students.
Derek Niño, Senior Consultant
Derek Niño concurrently served as high school mathematics teacher, English Language Development department chair, site administrator, and district-level advisor for 11 years. He worked almost exclusively with multilingual learners, supporting students as they learned both a new language and the universal language of math. Derek coordinated with teachers to develop mathematical concepts and language across content areas and collaborated with administrators to provide focused and ongoing professional learning for STEM teachers of multilingual learners. Derek spearheaded an afterschool program for multilingual learners which partnered with parents in leveraging the assets of the home as a thriving learning environment. The Riverside County Office of Education (in California) recognized this program as a Model of Academic Excellence and Innovation. This systemic approach that strategically brought together teachers, administrators, parents, and students, resulted in increases in greater mathematical proficiency, English proficiency, reclassification rates of multilingual learners, and graduation rates.
Derek holds a BS in Pure Mathematics from UC Riverside, an MA in Educational Administration from CSU San Bernardino, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Harvard. When not supporting educators, Derek spends his time with his wife, Sara, (a gifted special educator finishing her doctorate), hiking across New England, and composing.
